The name Thanksgiving is fitting, as the theme of the holiday is to do just that – give thanks. A mesothelioma or lung cancer diagnosis can be difficult any time of the year, but it can feel extremely difficult to express thankfulness when an asbestos-related disease diagnosis interrupts your life.
While Thanksgiving is a time to give thanks for all we have, feasting on Thanksgiving food is a long-time tradition for those who celebrate.
If you are undergoing treatment for your mesothelioma or lung cancer, your appetite may be poor as a result of your body reacting to treatment. It is very important to stay nourished and well fed to allow your body to stay strong and help fight your cancer. While we recommend you talk with your doctor about food and diets to explore while on your treatment plan, there are many classic Thanksgiving foods that can help keep your body healthy.
Cranberries
Cranberries are rich with antioxidants and high in fiber, making them an excellent choice to help promote digestion. These small berries also contain phytonutrients – a chemical found in plants that is scientifically proven to help fight disease. Cranberries’ peak season is September through November – making them an excellent addition to any Thanksgiving meal.
Sweet Potatoes
Sweet potatoes are nutrient powerhouses, packed with vitamins, minerals, and fiber. Like cranberries, sweet potatoes also contain phytochemicals to help your body actively fight illnesses you may be facing. These delicious potatoes are a staple at Thanksgiving meals. Enjoy them roasted, steamed, boiled, or fried. Leaving the skin on them boosts their nutritional value.
Brussels Sprouts
Brussel sprouts are a bit controversial depending on your pallet. If you indulge in brussels sprouts, you’ll be getting a healthy dose of fiber, vitamins, and minerals. Brussels sprouts are low in calories but high in nutritional value so you can enjoy them as a side dish at your Thanksgiving feast!
