Sean Sasser was an HIV activist and Pastry Chef. Sean helped raise awareness and break down barriers for LGBTQIA+ individuals on television when he and his partner Pedro Zamora held a commitment ceremony on the popular MTV Show, “MTV Real World”. Sadly, Mr. Zamora passed away due to complications from AIDS shortly after their ceremony. Sean was a talented pastry Chef and enjoyed working on his latest creations at RIS restaurant in Washington. He married Michael Kaplan in June 2013.

In July 2013, Sean was diagnosed with a rare lung cancer called Mesothelioma. A disease that is only caused by exposure to Asbestos. However, Sean had no known exposure to the deadly fiber. Looking for answers, the Sasser family contacted the Law offices of Serling & Abramson, P.C. in Birmingham, MI. It was found that in the early years of Sean’s life, he worked with his mother’s boyfriend in remodeling old homes in Detroit, MI.  It was there, while working on these homes, that Sean was exposed to dangerous dust containing asbestos fibers. These fibers became airborne from tearing down drywall and other home materials that contained asbestos from the original construction of the home. Unfortunately, an activity the Sasser family thought would help keep their child safe and off the streets of Detroit, eventually took their child later in life. Sean passed away from Mesothelioma in August 2013 at the age of 44.

The Serling & Abramson, P.C. law firm worked tirelessly for the Sasser family. The team did intense research fighting for the family, and getting them the justice, they deserved. Though it doesn’t bring Sean back to the family that loved him, the team of Serling & Abramson, P.C. hopes that the work they did, not only brought financial compensation but also some closure and answers to a horrible disease that took their son and husband’s life.
