The unions in Michigan that are most afflicted and have spent a lot of time and concern in the later years in dealing with asbestos-related diseases are the Building Trades, the auto unions, the UAW, AFL-CIO, and their affiliated trades such as the plumbers, electricians, and bricklayers, and so many of the others.
They have received the most impact from exposures to asbestos. The in-plant exposures from companies that employed groups of men, sometimes affiliated with the auto industry, sometimes they were affiliated with a separate union. I think in recent years, all the unions have focused on the health hazards and have set up health programs to monitor disease and work with their members if there are continuing exposures, which there are, especially in the brake lining setting. They’re much more educated today.
