Each year, on the third Sunday of June we celebrate Father’s Day. This year, Father’s Day falls on Sunday, June 18th, 2023. Father’s Day is a holiday to honor fatherhood in its many forms and special relationships parenthood presents itself. While Father’s Day in the United States was first celebrated in 1910, it wasn’t until 1972 that Father’s Day was made an official U.S. holiday by President Richard Nixon.

Here are some fun facts about Father’s Day:

  • In the United States, a necktie is the most popular gift to give on Father’s Day.
  • 66.3 million people in the United States identify as fathers
  • 100 million Father’s Day cards are sent in the US every year. 50% of these cards are bought for Dads while the others are purchased for husbands, grandfathers, sons, brothers, and uncles.
  • In the 1920s and 30s, many people boycotted Father’s Day and Mother’s Day and instead advocated for a joint “Parent’s Day” to show equal respect for both parents.
  • Father’s Day is celebrated worldwide but it originated in America – Washington State to be exact!

Men are exposed to asbestos more often than women, making them 4.6 times more likely to be diagnosed with mesothelioma and lung cancer than their female counterparts. The typical mesothelioma patient is a man above the age of 65 with a blue-collar or military background. Because of the age and gender demographics of patients, many of them are fathers.
