Federal Opposition Demands Greater Penalties for Imports in Australia

According to abc.net, the Federal Opposition is demanding the Government impose greater penalties to stop building products that contain asbestos from coming into Australia. Large amounts of imports for construction products such as cement compound board has tested positive for asbestos in the past year, according to the Asbestos Industry Association.

Labor’s Employment has called on the Government to give greater priority to stopping asbestos imports at the border through increased surveillance and targeting imports from countries known to make such asbestos-contaminated products in the past. Opposition Leader, Bill Shorten, was quoted as saying, “Border security isn’t just about people movements, it’s also about dangerous substances coming into this country.”

In the USA and around the world, asbestos exposure has been shown to cause malignant mesothelioma, lung cancer, asbestosis and a variety of other cancers. If you or a friend has been diagnosed with asbestosis, lung cancer or mesothelioma, please call us at 1(800)995-6991 for a free consultation.
