Detroit, Michigan is plagued by abandoned, asbestos containing, buildings. The blight could be a budget buster, according to an article posted by WXYZ.
The founder of Motor City Blight Busters says the non-profit organization has taken down more than a hundred homes. The costs continue to increase with demolition permits, the cost of utility cut-offs, asbestos checks and other pre-demolition requirements.
A spokesman for Blight Busters says, “You know blight is like a cancer, if you don’t stop it, it spreads and kills everything. You won’t have anything left. I think it’s in everyone’s best interest to work with us.”
The cost of asbestos to our society continues well into the future. If asbestos is not properly abated, exposure can lead to diseases such as asbestosis, lung cancer and mesothelioma.
Who knows how many more abandoned houses and buildings could be demolished if it were not for the cost of asbestos abatement at these and other similar facilities?
