Storms in recent months in Kentucky have produced mounds of debris, and the state Division for Air Quality is recommending that people remember that the material may contain asbestos.
The agency advises keeping all debris from damaged buildings thoroughly wetted prior to disposal to prevent potential release of asbestos fibers. The asbestos debris has to be properly disposed of in an approved landfill.
Asbestos is commonly found in many building materials and flame-retardant products. The materials when disturbed, can release asbestos fibers which can be inhaled and cause health problems including mesothelioma and lung cancer.
